What Is Attention Deficit Disorder - ADD
I have a friend at work that has a grandson that has been diagnosed with child attention deficit disorder. After chatting with her about it for a while I began to wonder how it is possible to tell the difference between someone with ADD and someone who is just plain difficult. It seems to be most difficult to tell with boys under 17 years of age because they tend to progress slower than the girls anyway. My grandmother used to be the head teacher of a primary school and she was quite certain that boys didn't develop intellectually anything like as quickly as the girls. My interest raised, I decided to investigate further. It appears that there are three stages in normal development. The first stage...
Children from abusive homes can indeed go on to bully--bullying is a sign of abuse--but not all abused children become bullies and not all bullies come from abusive homes. There are other factors that can determine whether or not a child will go on to bully:- the child's temperament - lack of supervision (NOTE: bullies require constant supervision) - the social climate at schoolOn average, children and youth spend about 6 hours a day in school. It is the only place that children are brought together in large numbers for extended periods of time on a regular basis. Within the society of school, children and youth try to fit in, often by joining in peer group circles and cliques. This society within...

In all cultures, the perpetrators are most commonly the men of the family. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the most difficult of the anxiety disorders to diagnose because it lacks many of the more dramatic symptoms of other disorders. People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are not always prone to panic attacks, for example, and do not necessarily fear social situations. GAD usually includes subtler symptoms, such as excessive worry about things like work, family, health or money, and can be accompanied by physical symptoms that include muscle twitching, headaches, sweating, or gastrointestinal trouble. The National Institute of Health classifies a specific symptom of GAD as being excessive worry or anxiety occurring more days than not for at least a six month...

In today's mental health system there is a pattern of fraud and coercion that takes way the freedoms and dignity of children and their families. Children are receiving stigmatizing labels and being prescribed psychotropic drugs with many untoward effects. Psychiatrist Thomas Szasz, MD made the comment that if an individual hit us with a blackjack and robbed us of our dignity we would call them thugs, yet psychiatrists label and drug children and rob them of their dingity and nothing is said. All in the name of profit. Rarely, if never are the families given informed consent. Szasz has also stated, "From a sociological point of view, psychiatry is a secular institution to regulate domestic relations...
Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Mental Health Is ImportantMental health is how people think, feel, and act as they face life's situations. It affects how people handle stress, relate to one another, and make decisions. Like physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life. All aspects of our lives are affected by our mental health. Caring for and protecting our children is an obligation and is critical to their daily lives and their independence.Children and Adolescents Can Have Serious Mental Health Problems Like adults, children and adolescents can have mental health disorders that interfere with the way...

I will not go into theological debate here, but I have always believed that if God had wanted me to have pockets or be covered He would have had those included when I was born. He gave us a skin for that. If He wanted me to be black or brown or white or yellow or red (none of which are natural colors I might add) He would have made me exactly how He wanted me. If he wanted me to be tattooed, those would have been included as well, and if He wanted me to have more holes in my body than I have, He would have included them as well. Heaven forbid, most of us leak out the holes we already have...If you believe only in evolution, then evolution would have created all of those things as well. However God...

It's becoming increasingly clear to me, however, that what I'm hearing about even more often is childhood sexual abuse. It's everywhere. Some might say this epidemic of childhood sexual abuse is another "sign of the Apocalypse." Fear and Loathing in South Florida
During my most recent trip to the East coast of South Florida, which turned out to be much lengthier than anticipated, I knew before hand there would be much to loath and probably more to fear. I was not disappointed on either account.Upon arriving at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, I purchased a copy of the Miami Herald and immediately sensed fear, for I read that Governor Jeb Bush was about to sign a bill just that week that would become known as the "Stand Your Ground" law. The law immunizes citizens who use deadly force in self-defense against criminal prosecution and civil liability. Quickly realizing that under this "Shoot First" law, as long as the shooter "is not engaged in...

Who Was Jean Piaget?Jean Piaget was to cognitive development as Albert Einstein was to physics. In fact Einstein was afan of Piaget's work. Jean Piaget was born in Switzerland on Aug. 9, 1896. He published his first scientific paper at the age of 10. By the age of 22 he already had a doctorate in zoology. He became interested in psychoanalysis after WWII and attended lectures given by Carl Jung. He then studied in Paris working in Alfred Binet's child psychology lab. It was there that he first began to notice that children of the same ages answered true/false questions similarly. He returned to Switzerland and spent many years studying and conversing with children. He realized through his...
Parents, Teens and Cyberspace
Isn't that obscene?I heard Kris commenting on seeing an obscene image on the web page to Philip. Why should anybody be allowed to use such images in online? Someone should do something about people like these who made this horrible, obscene web page that uses pictures like that where anyone could see them. What will become of my teenage son when he comes across such a page? Why don't we censor this kind of thing?I was surprised to hear Philip's reply:Well, no, what you say? It's art. I see worse than that on TV channels! Why would anybody be upset about that? We're all adults here, right? And if we aren't, if there is some young innocent thirteen-year-old soul, why are their parents not supervising...

D. Corwin (1990) cites that in London many believed that sexual 'congress' with a child would cure venereal disease. Of capital rape prosecutions between 1730 and 1729, 25% of the cases involved victims younger than 10 years old.62% of females are sexually abused by age 18. Finkelhor, David and J. The perpetrators of the recent spate of financial frauds in the USA acted with callous disregard for both their employees and shareholders - not to mention other stakeholders. Psychologists have often remote-diagnosed them as "malignant, pathological narcissists".Narcissists are driven by the need to uphold and maintain a false self - a concocted, grandiose, and demanding psychological construct typical of the narcissistic personality disorder. The false self is projected to the world in order to garner "narcissistic supply" - adulation, admiration, or even notoriety and infamy. Any kind of attention is usually deemed by narcissists to be preferable to obscurity. The false self is suffused with...
"How To" Tips For Discussing Child...
Not an easy subject right? Before we begin, the important thing to remember is that you don't want to terrify your kids about the world we live in, or make them feel nervous on a daily basis. In particular with younger ones, we all know children are prone to nightmares when their imaginations are active about any kind of predator. This is important for you as a parent also. We ARE very fortunate in Australia that the rate of non-parental child abductions is low in comparison to other countries. In our eyes though a 'low' rate is still too many, and our aim is that NO children or their families will ever have to go through the unthinkable. Other well reported statistics on the rates of child sexual...
Attorneys and lawyers practicing family law take up cases relating to all kinds of family related issues. These can be adoption, prenuptial agreements, marriage, domestic violence, divorce, separation, legal separation, annulment, division of the property accumulated during the marriage, alimony, negotiation, adjudication, child custody and support, child abduction, kidnapping or child seizure, emancipation, abuse in the marriage, parental rights, paternity, juvenile, felonies etc., and many such cases related to family. Other than this they also deal with regular cases relating to criminal laws, property related laws, probation law, trusts etc. However, majority of the cases that come to family...
Signs of Child Sexual Abuse
Many families do not want to believe their child is being sexually abused even if the signs of child sexual abuse are staring them straight in the face. Unfortunately many families are in a similar situation where both parents are working full time and someone other than the biological parents are caring for their children. Under these circumstances the potential for child sexual abuse is more prevalent. Obviously under these circumstances it is tremendously important for parents to watch for the signs of child sexual abuse. Some common signs of child sexual abuse are: * Sexually advanced for his or her age * Increase in masturbation, preoccupation with sex or promiscuous behavior * Frequent...
The Nanny Camera Watches Nannies Watch Your Child
"Uppie! Uppie!" These words ring through the house as the four wheels turn furiously along the tiled floor. Suddenly, a toddler, nestled in a baby walker, appears around the corner. He shouts out a few high-pitched yelps, and then goes into a loop of shouting "Uppie! Uppie!" and yelping again. Wacky lights and sounds on the walker go off as the baby presses colorful buttons on its "control panel." And the tap tap of his feet continue as he continues sprinting awkwardly along the kitchen floor. Then, the baby's destination becomes clear: the stairway at the far left corner of the kitchen! A safety gate usually blocks the baby's access to the stairs, but someone in the house forgot to close it. The...

How Do The Merciful Obtain Mercy?
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Matthew 5:7)."This verse means if you give mercy, you shall receive it," says Anna, age 9. As Christina, 6, says, "If someone is bad to you, forgive them."If you're skeptical about going out of your way to show mercy to someone in need, consider the advice of psychiatrist Karl Menninger. There are many different types of lawn grass for different types of growing zones. Whether you're starting to buid your lawn or reseeding the lawn, choose the grass best suited to your climate. Warm season grasses, such as Bahia grass, can handle droughts much better than cold season grasses. Bahia grass has got a tough, coarse texture and flat grass blades. It does adapt easily to a wide range of soil conditions, but it is certainly a warm season grass. This grass spreads slowly by short rhizomes, but once it takes hold it will grow thick and requires only little care. It pushes out the weeds without creating any thatch. And it does need frequent mowing. Bahia grass is very prone to mole...
What Abused Women Must Know When Seeking Help...
The last thing an abused woman needs to hear while seeking safety from domestic violence is that she's crazy. Unfortunately, however, this may be one of first things she learns from the evaluating mental health professional. The Battered Women's Movement and Clinical Psychology are as far apart as the North and South Pole. Yet, many people outside of these circles/disciplines believe domestic abuse treatment and advocacy are sub-specialties of the practice of psychology. Not at all so! After I fled from the danger I lived in Chicago, I retreated into a life of solace and wrote All But My Soul: Abuse Beyond Control. Creating that publication was the most amazing experience of my life-right up there...
What to Do when a Dog Bites You!
Are you afraid of dogs and being bitten by them? Well, you are not alone. Dog bites are very common cause of injuries in not only children but also adults. Dog bites can cause serious consequences from psychological trauma or permanent deformity. And the worst consequence of a dog bite is death. It is eerie in a way to say that dog bites are a nightmare coming from what is supposed to be a man's best friend. There is actually a dog bite epidemic in the United States. Dogs bite almost 5 million or 2% of the country's population, annually. Most of the victims are children, often bitten in the face. From this number, 800,000 are in need of medical attention. Meanwhile, 1,000 each day need to undergo...
Are Public Schools Anti-Parent?
Some public schools try to turn children against their parents with scary classroom stories or lessons about child abuse. Public school authorities have increasingly decided that they are children's first line of defense against child abuse. This new attitude falls under what is now known as "protective behavior curriculum." The assumptions behind this curriculum are that every child needs to be warned about and prepared for possible dangers of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse because allegedly every child is a potential victim, not only of strangers but of his or her own family. Increasingly, school authorities instruct teachers to ask children questions about their parents' behavior and actions...
All About Child Molestation
Often we misuse the words 'pedophile' and 'child molester'. We tend to use 'pedophile' to all offenders who sexually abuse children. But these two words are different in meaning. A pedophile refers to a man or woman who has recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving pubescent or prepubescent children. The offense must occur over a period of at least six months for a person to be called a pedophile. Pedophile is one case of a paraphilia, a psychosexual disorder. Paraphilia is not a type of child sexual abuse crime. This disorder causes a person to fantasize children sexually. But fantasizing, although alarming, is not illegal. If the person act out his fantasies or...
No One in the Family Escapes
Families do not communicate primarily by language. That might surprise you, until you consider that humans bonded in families for millennia before we even had language. Even today, the most sensitive communications that have the most far-reaching consequences to our lives occur between parents and infants through tone of voice, facial expressions, touch, smell, and body posture, not language. Though less obvious than interactions with young children, most of your communications with your older children and with your husband also occur through an unconscious process of emotional attunement. You psychologically and even physically tune in your emotions to the people you love. That's how you can come...

Light Your Fire
By CommunitySoul - Neil Fellowes Have you ever listened to someone else speaking about themselves and had one of those 'If they can do that, so can I' thoughts? I often hear people say, 'I wish I could do so-and-so.' And for me this kind of statement is like the red rag and the bull. With all the 'stuff' that challenged me in the past (divorce, abuse, finances, self-esteem and lack of confidence) I know better than most that you can have nothing and create a worthwhile, dreamy and very holistic lifestyle. In fact, I'd go as far to say my life has become a bit of an experiment - and a personal quest - to see how much I can overcome, grow, enjoy and share what I've learned so others can benefit. When...
Will science find a cure for CP? The answer is complex. Since CP is actually a set of symptoms associated with a variety of causes, potential treatments will have to be manifold. Recent scientific findings have brought a ray of hope to an otherwise dreary outlook. Many scientists are now focusing on recent discoveries that suggest we will be able to replace lost or damaged brain cells. While such therapies are not yet available, it is likely that real clinical trials will begin in the next 5 to 10 years. It cannot be overemphasized that the most important person in the lives of children with CP is their caregiver. The caregiver, whether a parent or other person, must be able to recognize a child's...
The Narcissist and His Family
We are all members of a few families in our lifetime: the one that we are born to and the one(s) that we create. We all transfer hurts, attitudes, fears, hopes and desires - a whole emotional baggage - from the former to the latter. The narcissist is no exception. The narcissist has a dichotomous view of humanity: humans are either Sources of Narcissistic Supply (and, then, idealised and over-valued) or do not fulfil this function (and, therefore, are valueless, devalued). The narcissist gets all the love that he needs from himself. From the outside he needs approval, affirmation, admiration, adoration, attention - in other words, externalised Ego boundary functions. He does not require - nor does...
The Nurse Practice Act - A Closer Look
The Nurse Practice Act is a set of state laws that govern specific aspects of the nursing profession. The statutes are generally grouped with a chapter of state laws, referred to in its entirety as the Nurse Practice Act "the Act". The Act aims to protect the public from an unsafe nurse by ensuring minimum levels of performance. Individual state legislatures' determine the Acts content, so "the Act" may differ a bit from state-to-state. Nonetheless, many acts address common issues such as establishing the composition and scope of authority for the board of nursing; defining the practice of professional, practical or vocational nursing and advanced practice nursing; setting the requirements to obtain...
Who Is Most at Risk of Suffering a Traumatic...
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of two kinds of acquired brain injury, with the other type manifesting itself in acquired brain injuries, such as brain damage caused by a stroke, meningitis or any form of anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain). A traumatic brain injury can be any injury where a sudden trauma causes brain damage. An important part of understanding TBI is to understand its causes and how it can affect those most at risk, as traumatic brain injuries affect a wide variety of Americans every year, causing a multitude of symptoms that can vary from mild to extreme. There are varying statistics between some research studies, but there is a generally accepted view that at least 1.4...
Criminal Law Information: Fraud, Hate Crimes
Criminal law is one of the most common types of law practiced in the United States. People make mistakes, and when these mistakes involve the law, it is absolutely critical that if you find yourself on the wrong side of the law that you have the best lawyer at your side to help you protect your rights and freedom. Some of the most common infractions that people find themselves involved with are child abuse laws, fraud, and hate crimes. Child abuse laws are in place to help protect innocent people, but more and more often these days these laws are used to take advantage of innocent people. Unscrupulous people use the stigma attached with child abuse accusations to force innocent people into...
Dark Secret About Education Part II
This article further defines how to challenge the dark secret about our educational system. I encourage the reader to apply my Five Steps To Successful Living to improving our educational system. In my previous article called the Dark Secret About Education, I used four of my five steps (from a coaching process I call successful living )to focus on the need to reform our educational system. This article will complete my discussion. Believe in Positive Power. We can revitalize the whole educational system by more study of an emphasis on ethics, logic, philosophy, religions, the arts, sciences, and a greater awareness of the power of positive thinking. Our educators could start by teaching young...
Abuse Victims Widely Misdiagnosed
Some authorities say that up to 60 percent of psychiatric patients, both in-patient and out-patient, report childhood histories of physical or sexual abuse or both. This estimate excludes emotional abuse and neglect. My experience confirms that very many patients are suffering from PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) as a direct result of childhood maltreatment. But they do not know what their real problem is. Psychologists and psychiatrists know what to expect in the way of symptoms with war veterans: PTSD. We know as fact that the experiences of war can produce in even the strongest individual the constellation of symptoms that therapists should recognize as trauma. But for some reason, we have...
Child Custody
What is child custody? Child custody and guardianship refers to the practical and legal relationship between a parent and his child, which includes caring and making decisions for the child. The concept of the terms 'custody' 'access' or 'visitation' have now been replaced by 'residence' and 'contact'. Instead of the courts stating that a parent has 'custody' of a child, the child is now being said to 'reside' with that parent. Child custody is an issue that typically rises from incidents such as divorces, annulments and legal actions that involve children. Common statutory provisions state that the child born within a marriage will get the joint guardianship of the parents and the right of...
At the risk of starting the argument of all time, I feel compelled to point out that Americans today are simply not made of the same stern stuff as our ancestors. You disagree? Please write and tell me honestly what you think your nearest neighbor would do if awakened at midnight by the warning, "The redcoats are coming!" Frankly, my next door neighbor is an active duty Marine, but tucking tail is the first thing that comes to mind. I certainly cannot imagine him handing a rifle to his wife or daughter and telling them to "lock and load." Not in this lifetime, at any rate. He'd be too worried about his retirement. Our ancestors had one or two advantages over us. In the first place, most of those who...
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): What Is It
Over the past decade, as I have worked with cops, firfighters, abuse victims and children of addicts, I have learned that there are many causes for PTSD. It has also affirmed my belief that PTSD is real and harmful, not only to those who have it, but also to those around them. It impacts the way we act, react, our motivation and our capacity to feel--well, anything. Terrifying experiences that shatter people's sense of predictability and invulnerability can profoundly alter their coping skills, relationships and the way they perceive and interact with the world. The criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are 1) exposure to a traumatic event(s) in which the person witnessed or experienced...
Coram Boy New York Tickets Are A Hit On Broadway
Coram boy is an adventure of epic proportions which is based a novel by Jamila Gavin created in 2000 which won awards. The fascinating show officially opened on May 2, 2007, at the Imperial Theatre in New York City after a huge success as a dramatic play in London. Coram Boy offers a very emotional experience with a storyline which can only be called rich and insightful. The dramatic aspects of the play come from the dark history of the 18th century which is not often talked about, the many accounts of child abuse and cruelty. Coram Boy tickets are selling on average for forty-five dollars and the shows are not selling out very often. The Story Of Coram Boy On Broadway The storyline is centered on...
Child Abuse
Children are considered as future of a country. If their present is bright and healthy, the future of the country would also dazzle. In the process of development, the child goes through many stages. As an infant, he receives love and care of his family members. After few years when he starts going to school he receives guidance from teachers. Everybody whether a relative, neighbor, friend or guardian wants to give love and affection to the child but intentionally or unintentionally they may upset the child through some unwanted action of theirs. Parents, teachers and well-wishers should listen to the problems of children and try to solve them. All parents want to fulfill the basic needs of their...
E-gold is known as private currency as it is not issued by governments. E-gold is integrated into an account based payment system that empowers people to use gold as money. E-gold was created in response to this need. E-gold transactions - a "spend" - are completed electronically, usually using the web interface, and they always settle by weight of the metal even if denominated in some other way. E-gold is a form of commodity money, so it is subject to the price fluctuations of that commodity. E-gold does not sell its e-metal directly to users. E-gold, unlike e-Bullion for instance, does not sell digital currency directly to the user. E-gold charges an account fee (or Agio Fee) of 1% per annum...
