Although many people fail to see the warning signs, the issue of domestic violence is a major one in our country and all across the world. Countless women are battered and killed by their husbands and boyfriends on a daily basis. And I do mean literally ever day! Now, you may stop to ask yourself how this could be. It is simply really; no one is helping these women in their desperate time of need. While it sounds utterly awful when you say it out loud, it is true nonetheless. The same goes for limitless children. The key to assist in preventing and dealing with domestic violence is often keeping an watch for the warning signs. Stop for a moment and think about the women and children you[..]

merican Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "What lies behind us and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Little did he know that his quote would sum up the past, present and future of women everywhere. He also didn’t know that once-oppressed women would emerge as powerful pillars of society. Historically, women have been viewed as inferior and grouped with the weak. That is why they were the first to be rescued from the Titanic. It wasn’t until the 20th century that American women were allowed to vote. This is what lies behind us. This is also the history of women, who never quit paving the way to liberation. What lies before us is[..]

Aristotle, one of the wisest men alive during the times of the Ancient Greeks, had something really special to say about anger it begins "Anybody can become angry...", and if you want to read the rest of the quotation, just Google "Aristotle on Anger". There are however a number of tips for anger management available. We shall not be discussing tips here; we will rather just try to come to grips with what anger actually does to us. It is completely natural to become angry, anger is an emotion or a reaction to an emotion, and it is a signal that something in our lives is not quite right. Anger is a defensive reaction is a perceived threat and triggers our fight or flight responses. Just[..]

If you don't, you may find yourself in a battle such as Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in "The War of the Roses." Many people do not understand why individuals become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior. What people often underestimate is the complexity of drug addiction—that it is a disease that impacts the brain and because of that, stopping drug abuse is not simply a matter of willpower. Through scientific advances we now know much more about how exactly drugs work in the brain, and we[..]

Anger and anger management can both be learned behaviors. We tend to learn behaviors from those around us. If we have lived with people who express anger in negative ways, we are likely to use the same approach. The good news is that negative behaviors can be unlearned, and positive ones can be learned to replace them. The key to changing old, destructive patterns of angry behaviors is to learn what contributes to your feelings of anger. Because of what is called the "Human Condition" I think this is one of the most profound and often asked questions among humans. It is probably also one of the questions about who we are that is most of the time left unanswered. As an abused child this was one question I often struggled with but in the end I had to figure it out on my own because I had nobody left to turn to. Identity can take the form of an image, an impression, an emotion or feeling, or a body sensation and make it one of the many building blocks that define "me." Forms of identity that we took on early in life or create in the present moment might include: I am a strong man; I am an optimist; I am an extrovert; I am a spiritual person; I am a happy person; I am a fearful person; I am a worrier; I am a manager; I am a parent, etc. When we[..]

Pain, fear, anger; these are the side effects that go along with love, joy, laughter and absurdity in this big over-the-counter drug that we call life. There are many theories, from nature vs. nurture to potty training methods, that attempt to explain how our personalities are formed. All these theories have both strong and weak points. Still, I have to wonder if there may be a simple basic underlying reason that some people have so much anger and sadness or are content to walk through life in a haze of apathy while others seem[..]

cl Studies around the world are clearly showing that obesity rates continue to climb despite the weight–loss industry being worth billions of dollars. With all the aids to weight loss why is it that people continue to get fatter? The answer lies in how the body was designed to survive. The body is all about survival. In a psychological sense the subconscious creates beliefs that are formed, initially at least, for safety and psychological survival. Such a mechanism could be in place when an abused child grows up obese as a way of protecting herself from the advances of men, or as a way of proving that she has control, for instance. Physical Punishment is Punishable- Bringing Up Your Child

Physical punishment is not a very effective manner of disciplining your child. Years of research has brought forth evidence that has linked physical punishment in one's childhood to negative developmental characteristics in people such as increased aggression, tolerance towards violence, physical injury, antisocial behavior, and being unable to adjust as an adult. Moreover, it has been proven that physical punishment serves as a big obstacle in the development and safety of children. It is far too easy for physical punishment to slowly turn into physical abuse leading to devastating physical and mental injury that can even result in death. Anger is an emotional distress which must be checked and not allowed to grow into a mighty rage. People have died from the anger of country or group leaders through creation of wars or through acts of terrorism. Marital abuse, child abuse and street fights are some of the effects of anger that have gone out of control. Usually a person gets angry not out of choice but out of provocation. The challenge here is to disallow provocation to influence our emotion and make us do things that we regret later. If we have a problem in managing our anger, we must learn to control it before it controls us. What causes anger? Let us identify the triggers before we get to how to control it. When[..]
